How to differentiate between confidence and over confidence?

Confidence : In an interview, panel asked the candidate to define confidence.

He answered ‘What is the need to answer, if I am going to get selected!’

That’s confidence.

Over confident candidate didn’t appeared for the interview!

Confidence is knowing your abilities and putting enough efforts. Over confidence is knowing your abilities but putting no efforts.
