Depends on type of girl and her upbringing. Some girls laugh away and say ‘No thanks’ or ‘Hmm …okay’ etc.. Some girls like to kill you. Some make a scene.
No common theory arrived yet. I always proposed (or have been proposed) indirectly and hence was always safe!
I think they react better to indirect proposals.
