There is an interesting problem with ideas that we rarely notice.
When we are trying to develop an idea, we usually think the main challenge is coming up with something good. We search for possibilities, make connections, reject weak options, and gradually improve what remains. But the longer we work on the same idea, the more something else happens: we become familiar with it. And familiarity can change what we are capable of seeing.
Think about a messy table. You leave something on it one day, then something else: a few papers, a book, a cable, a cup. Eventually the table becomes cluttered. But because you see it every day, you stop noticing the clutter.
Then a guest arrives. They look at the table and immediately see what you no longer see. Nothing about the table changed. The observer changed.
Something similar happens with ideas. The more time we spend inside an idea, the more its assumptions, structures, weaknesses and limitations can become normal to us. What once looked unusual becomes part of the background.
This is where AI introduces something potentially much larger than simply faster brainstorming. It can change the relationship between a human and the limits of their own thinking.
1. Cognitive Explosion
1.1 From Generating Ideas to Exploring Possibilities
For most of human history, generating ideas was itself a significant constraint. You could think about a problem for an hour and come up with ten possibilities. You could discuss it with other people and produce a few more. You could research the subject, read books, study what others had done and gradually expand the field of possibilities.
But there was still a fundamental limitation: the number of possibilities available for exploration was constrained by the number of possibilities humans could generate.
AI changes that equation. Ask an AI to generate approaches to a problem and it can produce dozens of possibilities. Ask it to combine them, challenge them, approach the problem from another discipline, reverse the assumptions or generate unusual alternatives, and the number can grow rapidly.
1.2 The Expanding Search Space
This creates what might be called a cognitive explosion. The important change isn’t simply that AI gives us answers. It gives us a much larger search space.
This is somewhat analogous to what happened in chess with engines such as Stockfish. A human player can consider a limited number of candidate moves, while a chess engine can examine an enormous number of possible continuations and evaluate them.
AI-assisted thinking introduces something similar into intellectual work. Instead of asking only, What idea can I come up with?, we can increasingly ask, What are all the ideas I could explore?
That is a profound change, but it also exposes another limitation.

2. Idea Exhaustion
2.1 When New Ideas Start Looking Familiar
Even when there are theoretically endless possibilities, an individual human eventually begins to run out of new possibilities that they can see. This doesn’t mean there are literally no ideas left. It means that, within the person’s current mental model, the obvious possibilities have been explored.
You develop an idea, make it better, find another variation, combine two elements, remove one, change the structure, refine the argument. Eventually, the new ideas begin looking suspiciously like the old ideas wearing different clothes.
This is idea exhaustion. The conceptual space hasn’t necessarily been exhausted; your ability to see new territory within it has.
2.2 AI Extending the Search
AI can push that boundary outward. It can continue generating alternatives after the human has reached the point where their own brainstorming starts becoming repetitive. More importantly, it can combine things that the human might not have naturally combined.
A person might think through A, B, C and D. AI might produce a possibility such as A + D, but interpreted through a completely different domain. That doesn’t guarantee a good idea; most generated ideas will not be good. The value is in extending the search.
The human no longer has to stop simply because they have exhausted the ideas that they themselves can currently see. AI becomes an additional generator of possibilities.
And that leads to a more subtle problem. Sometimes the problem isn’t that we have run out of ideas. Sometimes we don’t even realize what we are failing to see.
3. Idea Blindness
3.1 The Messy Table
Return to the messy table. The owner sees it every day; the guest doesn’t. The owner has adapted to it, while the guest hasn’t. This is why the guest can sometimes see the problem immediately.
The same thing can happen with an idea. When you work on an idea continuously, you gradually develop a relationship with it. You learn its vocabulary, understand its internal logic, know why you made each decision and become familiar with its assumptions. You know which objections you’ve already considered and which parts you believe are strong or still need improvement.
All of that knowledge is useful, but it can also create a blind spot. The idea becomes your normal, and you are no longer looking at it from the outside.
3.2 When Familiarity Becomes a Blind Spot
This is why an outsider can sometimes make an apparently obvious observation that the person who has spent months developing the idea never noticed. The outsider isn’t necessarily more intelligent. They simply haven’t adapted to the room.
AI can be useful here in a different way from brainstorming. Instead of asking, How can you improve my idea?, we can ask, What looks strange about this idea to you? We can ask what assumptions we are making without realizing it, what an outsider would notice immediately, or what we are not seeing because we have spent too much time inside the framework.
That changes the role of AI. It is no longer merely an idea generator; it becomes a kind of external observer. It can look at the arrangement without having lived with the arrangement in the same way. This connects naturally with The Augmented Mind, where AI is explored as a cognitive partner rather than simply a tool.
3.3 Breaking the Frame
Of course, AI isn’t automatically an objective observer. It can inherit our assumptions, follow our framing and reinforce our existing ideas. So simply asking AI for an opinion isn’t enough. The useful move is to deliberately ask it to break the frame: challenge the premise, reverse the assumptions, approach the problem from another field, argue against the conclusion, or look for what has become normalized.
Don’t always ask AI to clean the room. Sometimes ask it what looks wrong about the room.
4. Cognitive Distance
4.1 The Value of Stepping Outside
This brings us to a broader possibility. Traditionally, one way to escape the limitations of our own thinking has been to create distance: leave the problem alone for a while, talk to someone unfamiliar with it, read something from a completely different field, explain the idea to a person who knows nothing about it, or return to it after some time has passed.
These techniques work partly because they interrupt familiarity. AI gives us another way to create that distance. We can remain engaged with the problem while temporarily changing the perspective from which we examine it.
4.2 The AI as the Stranger
We can ask the AI to become the stranger in the room—not the collaborator who already understands everything we have built, and not the assistant whose job is simply to make our idea better, but the observer who walks in and asks, “Why is the table arranged like this?”
That distinction matters. If we always ask AI to improve our ideas, we may simply become more efficient at developing the same ideas. If we ask it to challenge our framing, it can help us discover that we have been optimizing something we should have reconsidered.
4.3 A Different Kind of Augmentation
This suggests a different way of thinking about AI augmentation. The value of AI may not only be that it makes us more productive thinkers. It may also allow us to become less trapped by the limitations of our own perspective. Those are not the same thing.
A person can think very deeply about an idea and still miss something obvious. A person can generate hundreds of variations and still remain inside the same conceptual frame. A person can become extremely knowledgeable about a subject and simultaneously become accustomed to things that an outsider would immediately question.
AI cannot eliminate these limitations, but it can give us another cognitive position from which to examine them. That may be one of the more important consequences of AI-assisted thinking. The same principle connects with AI Judgment and Sui Inspectio (Metacognition): expanded capability still requires deliberate judgment and examination.
The future of brainstorming may therefore not simply be about generating more ideas. It may be about gaining the ability to step outside our own ideas while we are still working on them.
The human brings the intention, experience, judgment and direction. AI expands the search space, continues when our obvious ideas run out, and can question what we have become accustomed to. When used deliberately, it can become the stranger who walks into the room and notices what we stopped seeing.
