For most of human history, intelligence was largely a private asset.
A person was born with a certain cognitive capacity, educated it, exercised it, and gradually accumulated knowledge and experience. Schools existed to transfer knowledge. Books extended memory. Teachers guided understanding. Universities trained people to reason within increasingly specialized domains.
Artificial intelligence changes the environment in which this development takes place.
AI is not merely another source of information. It is an interactive cognitive system that can explain, challenge, simulate, calculate, compare, translate, generate and reason alongside a human being.
That creates a possibility far more consequential than simply using AI to get things done.
AI may become an instrument for developing intelligence itself.

From Knowledge Acquisition to Intelligence Development
Traditional education is heavily organized around acquiring knowledge.
A student learns mathematics, history, economics, science, languages and other subjects. The assumption is that a larger knowledge base produces better thinking.
But knowledge and intelligence are not the same thing.
A person can know thousands of facts and still reason badly. Another person may know relatively little but possess exceptional abilities to identify patterns, ask questions, construct hypotheses and solve unfamiliar problems.
AI changes the economics of knowledge. Information is becoming extraordinarily cheap and increasingly accessible. The scarce resource therefore shifts.
The important question becomes less “How much do I know?” and increasingly “How well can I think?”
That could eventually force education to move from knowledge accumulation toward deliberate intelligence development.
AI as a Cognitive Training Partner
A book can teach. A lecture can teach. A teacher can teach. But none of these can continuously adapt themselves to every thought produced by an individual.
AI can.
A person can propose an argument and ask: Where is the weakness?
They can develop a theory and ask: What would disprove this?
They can solve a problem and ask: Give me three different approaches.
They can make a prediction and ask: What assumptions am I making?
They can write an explanation and ask: Explain this to me as if I were wrong.
The interaction becomes a form of cognitive training.
The AI is not simply supplying an answer. It is providing resistance.
And resistance is essential for intellectual development.
A muscle does not become stronger because someone tells it what a muscle is. It becomes stronger through repeated effort against resistance. The same principle may apply to thinking.
The Socratic Machine
One of the most interesting possibilities is that AI could become a form of personalized Socratic tutor.
Socrates did not primarily teach by giving answers. He questioned assumptions.
Why do you believe that? What follows from that? Is there an exception? What happens if we reverse the argument? Can you prove it?
AI can perform this process at enormous scale.
Imagine a student developing an idea. Instead of immediately correcting the student, an AI could deliberately challenge it: “Your conclusion depends on three assumptions. What happens if the second assumption is false?”
The student responds. The AI challenges the response. The student modifies the argument. The AI introduces an opposing example. The student tries again.
Eventually the student has not merely received information.
The student has exercised reasoning.
Intelligence Could Become Iterative
Human intellectual development has traditionally been relatively slow. A person encounters a problem, thinks about it, perhaps discusses it with someone, reads about it, and eventually reaches a conclusion.
AI compresses this cycle.
Think. Ask. Challenge. Revise. Test. Think again.

The cycle can repeat dozens of times. This creates something resembling an intellectual feedback loop.
The important consequence is not that AI thinks instead of the human. It is that the human can potentially think more iterations.
And iteration is one of the foundations of intellectual improvement.
From One Mind to Two
When a person works alone, the process is constrained by one perspective. When two people collaborate, different experiences and assumptions enter the process.
AI introduces another possibility: human intelligence + machine intelligence.
The machine does not need to replace the human for this combination to be powerful.
- Human: goals, judgment, intuition, values, experience and curiosity.
- AI: breadth, memory, speed, alternative perspectives, simulation and calculation.
The resulting system can be more capable than either component operating independently.
This suggests that intelligence in the AI era may increasingly be understood not simply as an attribute of an individual brain, but as a property of a human-machine cognitive system.
The Danger: Cognitive Atrophy
But there is a serious paradox.
The same technology that can develop intelligence can also weaken it.
If someone asks AI to write every argument, solve every problem, make every decision and explain everything, the person may gradually stop exercising the underlying capabilities.
A calculator can improve mathematical productivity. But if someone never learns arithmetic, the calculator has not developed their arithmetic ability.
Likewise, an AI that always thinks for us may make us productive without making us intellectually stronger.

AI as a substitute
Human: “Give me the answer.”
AI: “Here it is.”
The human moves on.
AI as an amplifier
Human: “Here is my answer. Try to break it.”
AI: “Here are four weaknesses.”
Human: “I fixed them. What else?”
AI: “Now consider this counterexample.”
The human becomes better.
The distinction is not the technology. It is the mode of interaction.
The New Literacy: Knowing How to Think With AI
Prompting may therefore turn out to be only a small part of the AI revolution.
The deeper skill is cognitive orchestration.
- Ask for an explanation.
- Request a counterargument.
- Demand evidence.
- Generate alternatives.
- Test assumptions.
- Simulate scenarios.
- Compare models.
- Expose contradictions.
- Ask the AI to critique its own answer.
- Ask for criticism of your own reasoning.
The goal is not to produce the perfect prompt. The goal is to construct a productive thinking environment.
Intelligence Development Could Become Personalized
Traditional education operates largely on averages. A classroom may contain thirty students, but one teacher cannot provide thirty completely different intellectual training programs every minute.
AI can potentially provide something closer to individual cognitive coaching.
One student may need stronger logical reasoning. Another may need mathematical intuition. Another may need to learn how to construct arguments. Another may need to overcome a tendency to accept the first plausible explanation.
The AI can observe the interaction and adjust the difficulty.
This introduces a remarkable possibility: education could become continuous, adaptive and individualized.
The End of the Fixed Intelligence Mindset?
We often talk about people as though intelligence were a relatively fixed personal characteristic: He is intelligent. She is not. He is good at mathematics. She is a poor writer.
But if cognitive abilities can be repeatedly exercised with an intelligent partner, the boundary between ability and development becomes less obvious.
AI could make intellectual training much more accessible. A curious teenager could explore advanced mathematics. A businessperson could repeatedly practice strategic reasoning. A writer could debate an AI about structure and argument. A scientist could use AI to explore competing hypotheses.
An ordinary person could spend an hour every evening deliberately training reasoning skills.
The consequence could be significant.
The distribution of intelligence may not remain as fixed as we have historically assumed.
But Intelligence Is Not the Same as Wisdom
There is one limitation that must not be ignored.
Better reasoning does not automatically produce better decisions.
A person can become extremely intelligent at achieving a goal while having a terrible goal.
AI can help answer “How can I do this?” It does not automatically answer “Should I do this?”
Intelligence concerns the ability to understand, reason and solve. Wisdom concerns judgment about what is worth pursuing. Values concern what we consider desirable or acceptable.
AI may dramatically increase human cognitive capability without automatically increasing human wisdom.
The Most Interesting Possibility
Perhaps the greatest transformation will not occur inside AI.
It will occur inside people.
For centuries, humanity developed intelligence through a combination of biological capacity, education, experience, culture and interaction with other humans.
AI adds a new component: persistent access to an artificial cognitive partner.
A person can now have something resembling an intellectual laboratory available whenever curiosity appears.
- Have an idea? Test it.
- Don’t understand something? Explore it.
- Think you are right? Try to destroy your argument.
- Want to learn? Ask progressively harder questions.
- Have a theory? Build competing explanations.
The person is no longer limited to consuming knowledge.
They can continuously exercise cognition.
From Artificial Intelligence to Augmented Intelligence
Perhaps the more useful phrase for the future is therefore not simply Artificial Intelligence.
It is Augmented Intelligence.

The important question is not whether machines become more intelligent than humans. That comparison may eventually become almost meaningless.
The more interesting question is:
What happens when ordinary human beings can continuously interact with systems possessing extraordinary cognitive capabilities?
A person with access to such a system is not the same cognitive entity as the same person without it.
The difference may eventually be comparable to the difference between a person who has access to writing and one who must rely entirely on memory.
Writing did not merely store information. It changed what human beings could think about.
The internet did not merely distribute information. It changed how people could learn.
AI may not merely automate intellectual work.
It may change how intelligence itself develops.
The Choice Ahead
There will probably be two kinds of AI users.
Those who use AI to avoid thinking.
And those who use AI to become better thinkers.
The first group will experience enormous convenience.
The second may experience something much more profound.
They may gradually build a cognitive partnership in which every question becomes an opportunity to test an idea, every mistake becomes feedback, and every interaction becomes another iteration of intellectual development.
That could turn AI from a productivity tool into something closer to a personal intellectual gym.
And perhaps that is the real promise of AI.
Not that machines will think so that humans don’t have to.
But that machines may finally make it possible for far more humans to practice thinking at a depth, speed and intensity that was previously available only to a small minority.
The ultimate revolution may therefore not be Artificial Intelligence replacing human intelligence.
It may be Artificial Intelligence helping human intelligence develop.
