Some books begin with a publisher, a deadline, and a clearly defined subject. This one began with a question: What happens to human thinking when artificial intelligence becomes genuinely powerful?
That question gradually developed into a much larger exploration of intelligence, technology, education, creativity and the changing relationship between humans and machines. Over time, ideas that had initially appeared as separate observations began to connect with one another. Eventually, it became clear that they were pointing toward a much larger subject—the possibility that artificial intelligence may change not only what we can do, but also the way we think.
That exploration has now become a planned three-book series: AI & Human Intelligence — How AI Changes What It Means to Think.
Today, Book I: The Augmented Mind begins that journey.
From Ideas to a Book
The project did not begin as an attempt to write a conventional book about artificial intelligence. It grew out of years of thinking and writing about human reasoning, education, intelligence, technology and the ways in which people develop and use their cognitive abilities.
The emergence of increasingly capable AI changed the nature of those questions. AI was no longer simply another technological tool. It was beginning to interact directly with activities that we traditionally associate with human intelligence: reasoning, writing, analysis, problem-solving, creativity, learning and the generation of ideas.
This raised a more fundamental question. If machines can increasingly participate in cognitive work, what happens when humans begin using them not merely as tools, but as extensions of their own thinking?
That question became the foundation of The Augmented Mind.
The book explores the possibility that we are moving toward a new form of cognition in which human abilities and artificial intelligence work together. The important issue is not simply whether AI can perform particular tasks better or faster. It is how the availability of an external intelligence changes the way a person approaches problems, develops ideas, learns, creates and makes decisions.
This leads naturally to larger questions about expertise, education, creativity and intelligence itself. If human cognition can be systematically augmented by machines, then our traditional understanding of intelligence may also need to evolve.
Why Three Books?
The subject eventually became too large for a single volume. Rather than trying to compress every question into one book, I decided to develop the project as a three-part intellectual journey.
Book I — The Augmented Mind examines the emergence of a new relationship between human thinking and artificial intelligence. It begins with the practical experience of using AI as a cognitive partner and explores how technology can extend human capabilities in areas such as reasoning, analysis, creativity and knowledge work.
Book II — The Architecture of Intelligence will go deeper into the structure of intelligence itself. It will examine questions about reasoning, pattern recognition, creativity, knowledge, experience and the different components that together produce what we call intelligence. The objective is to move beyond the immediate experience of AI augmentation and investigate the underlying architecture of thinking.
Book III — The Future of Human Intelligence will look further ahead. If artificial intelligence continues to become more capable, the central question will gradually shift from what AI can do to what humans should become in response. The book will explore the longer-term implications for education, expertise, creativity, work, human development and the relationship between human and machine intelligence.
The three books therefore represent a progression: from augmentation, to the architecture of intelligence, and finally to the future of human intelligence.
Building the Book With AI
There is also something unusual about the way this project has been developed. Artificial intelligence is not only the subject of the books; it has also become part of the creative process behind them.
During the development of the project, I collaborated with ChatGPT extensively in brainstorming ideas, exploring different approaches, testing concepts, discussing possible structures and developing the arguments that eventually shaped the book.
ChatGPT also participated in the visual side of the project, particularly in brainstorming and producing image concepts and illustrations. This became an interesting part of the experiment because the technology being examined in the book was simultaneously becoming part of the process used to create the book.
That does not mean that the book was simply generated by AI. The intellectual direction, selection of ideas, interpretation, editorial decisions and final responsibility remain human. The collaboration instead represents something more interesting: an experiment in what becomes possible when a human thinker works continuously with an artificial intelligence system as a brainstorming and creative partner.
In that sense, the making of the book reflects one of its central subjects. We are beginning to see a transition from humans using AI occasionally as a tool toward humans working with AI as part of their regular cognitive environment.
A Journey That Is Just Beginning
Publishing The Augmented Mind is therefore not the conclusion of this project. It is the first major step in a longer exploration.
Artificial intelligence is developing rapidly, and our understanding of its implications is changing with it. Some of the questions that appear important today may look very different as AI systems become more capable. New questions will also emerge that are difficult to anticipate from our present position.
That is one reason for developing the project as three books rather than attempting to present a single, final theory of the future.
The purpose is to explore the transition as it unfolds: first by examining how AI can augment human thinking, then by looking more deeply at the architecture of intelligence, and finally by asking what this transformation could mean for human intelligence itself.
The intention is neither to treat AI as something that should simply be celebrated nor to approach it only through fear. The more useful task is to understand the transformation carefully, examine its possibilities and limitations, and ask what it means for human beings.
Book I Is Now Available
The first stage of that journey is now available with the publication of AI & Human Intelligence — Book I: The Augmented Mind.
For me, this book represents the beginning of a larger intellectual project rather than a finished statement about the future. The next two books will continue the exploration, moving from the experience of augmentation toward a deeper examination of intelligence and, eventually, the future relationship between human and artificial intelligence.
If you are interested in artificial intelligence, human intelligence, education, creativity, technology and the changing nature of thinking, I invite you to begin the journey with Book I.
