Human beings have always built tools that extend cognition. Writing extended memory. Books extended accumulated knowledge. Calculators extended numerical ability. Search engines extended access to information. Artificial intelligence is different in scale: it can participate directly in reasoning, generation, explanation, comparison and discovery.
That creates a paradox. The same technology can make a person more intellectually capable while making another person less intellectually engaged. AI does not automatically push everyone in the same direction. It can amplify the cognitive habits that already exist.
1. The Two Wolves

Imagine two people with access to exactly the same AI. One asks questions, challenges answers, develops hypotheses and uses the machine to explore ideas that would otherwise remain inaccessible. The other asks the machine to decide, write, summarize and solve whenever possible.
Both are using AI. But they are building different minds.
2. AI Is a Multiplier
A powerful cognitive tool does not merely add capability. It changes the economics of thinking. Questions that once required hours of research can be explored in minutes. Alternative explanations can be generated almost instantly. A rough idea can become a structured argument through dialogue.
But a multiplier multiplies inputs as well as outputs. Curiosity can become more productive. Intellectual laziness can become more efficient. The technology therefore does not have a single cognitive effect.
3. The K-Shaped Mind

This suggests a K-shaped pattern in human cognition. One branch moves upward: AI becomes a partner in questioning, reasoning, experimentation and creation. The other moves downward: increasingly routine intellectual work is delegated, and the habit of independently constructing an answer becomes weaker.
The divide is therefore not simply between people who have AI and people who do not. It can emerge between different ways of using the same AI.
4. Same Book. Same Teacher. Different Minds.

Education has always demonstrated that identical inputs do not produce identical minds. Two students can attend the same class, read the same book and receive the same explanation while developing very different internal models.
Social media adds another layer. Algorithms already personalize what people see, but AI can personalize the reasoning environment itself. One person can use it to encounter unfamiliar arguments and test assumptions. Another can use it to remain comfortably inside existing preferences.
5. From Cognitive Assistance to Cognitive Outsourcing

There is a crucial difference between asking AI to help think and asking AI to think instead. In the first case, the human retains the problem, evaluates the reasoning and decides what follows. In the second, the human increasingly becomes an approver of machine-produced conclusions.
The distinction may be invisible in the short term. Both workflows can be faster. The difference appears over time, because repeated behavior trains habits of attention and judgment.
6. The Feedback Loop

AI use creates a feedback loop. A person thinks, asks AI, receives an answer, evaluates it, acts on it and then uses the result to formulate the next question. If the person continually contributes hypotheses and criticism, the loop can expand intellectual capability.
If the person continually accepts the first plausible answer, the same loop can reinforce passivity. The important variable is not simply how much AI is used, but what the human contributes to the interaction.
7. AI Changes the Scale
The scale of this effect could be much larger than earlier cognitive technologies because AI can operate across many intellectual tasks at once. A single person can research, code, model, write, visualize and test ideas with assistance that previously required several specialized tools or people. The idea of AI as an intelligence multiplier becomes especially relevant here.
That makes cognitive divergence potentially more consequential. Small differences in habits can be amplified when the underlying tool becomes dramatically more capable.
8. The New Cognitive Divide
The emerging divide may therefore be less about access to information and more about the relationship between humans and intelligence. One group may use abundant machine intelligence to ask better questions, explore further and build stronger internal models. Another may use the same abundance to avoid the effort of forming those models.
This is not a fixed division. People can move between the two modes. The crucial issue is whether AI remains an instrument of human agency or gradually becomes a substitute for it.
9. Which Wolf Gets Stronger?

The central question is therefore not whether AI will make humans smarter or stupider. It can do either, depending on how the human-AI relationship is structured.
The deeper possibility is a K-shaped cognitive future: the same extraordinary technology pushing different people in opposite directions. For some, AI may become an intelligence multiplier that makes independent thought more ambitious. For others, convenience may gradually turn intelligence into something consumed rather than exercised.
The technology is the same. The trajectories are not.
And like the old parable of the two wolves, the outcome depends partly on which habit is repeatedly reinforced. The wolf being fed will not be.
